Finding Your Perfect AV Job

By Ashleigh Heywood

If you want to work in the AV industry you need to take a bit of time to find the right job for you. It is a competitive arena, but one that is growing fast so if there is a AV job you really want to do you still stand a good chance of getting that dream job.

If you are lacking in the correct experience do something about it. You may have to work for nothing for a bit, but it will be well worth doing if you end up doing a job you love and that pays well. Contact local audio visual firms and large companies that have in house AV teams and see if you can shadow one of their employees for a while. You will be surprised by how many will say yes. Alternatively volunteer to work in your local theatre or do some AV related work for a charity or local school.

If you are experienced in Audio Visual work, then make sure your CV is up to scratch. Be clear and concise about your experience and tailor it for each job you apply for. Make sure it is not over two pages long. If writing about yourself isn't your strong point, ask for help. There will be local (and free) help available just ask at the local job centre.

Check to see if there are AV recruitment agencies in your area. It may be that you can work on a contract basis whilst you look for a permanent role. The AV industry is one that is expanding, so likelihood is, you could work as a contractor for a long time.

Think outside the box when looking for jobs in the AV industry. If you get in on the ground floor in a new area of the industry you can get a good job and make a lot of money. An example of this is getting into lighting for residential homes which has only recently emerged as a new market for lighting networks that require AV skills.

If you have no experience and no knowledge of AV but know it's could be your passion, consider studying at college or university to better your chances of finding a job.
